In 2015, a friend of mine asked for help in designing lettering for a set of posters he was creating that showed different representations of summer.
In the design for ‘Summer’, I wanted to capture the feeling of the letters overheating in the hot, lazy days of mid-July. The strong verticality to the letters also creates an interesting counterpoint to the horizontal lines.
For ‘夏’ (natsu), I wanted to give the ideograph a sense of relaxation and calm in the evening light. To that end, I lengthened the bottom strokes and narrowed the middle, balancing the different parts to achieve a sense of peace.
On Été, I helped re-space and made more minor adjustments to the letterform based on my friend's original idea.
